bk007.jpg (845014 bytes)THE WONDERS OF THE YOSEMITE VALLEY, AND OF CALIFORNIA .  Kneeland, Samuel. Edition: Third Edition (revised) .4to, original embossed purple-brown cloth with gilt decoration, illustrated with two wood engraved maps and 10 original photographic plates mounted on stiff paper by John P. Soule, [iii]-xii, 13-[98 ]pp. Spine sunned ends a bit chipped, light rubbing, scattered marginal foxing. First plate opposite title page has some light soiling and crease along top of mount, not affecting image. Overall very good or better. Considered one of the most attractive early books on Yosemite, this worked contained in its second edition the first appearance of any of John Muir’s writings in a book, although they were anonymous. In this revised edition. Kneeland uses a lot of material from Muir’s scientific reports, and while there is some notion that not enough credit was given to Muir in this book, his name was at least mentioned. Additionally, since John Soule never visited California, some believe that the photographs were taken by Thomas Houseworth or Eadweard Muybridge. (Bk.07);$1475.

George Fiske (October 22, 1835 – October 21, 1918) was a well-known landscape photographer in the United States. Fiske was born in New Hampshire and moved west with his brother to San Francisco. He apprenticed with Charles L. Weed and worked with Carleton E. Watkins, both early Yosemite photographers. Fiske and his wife moved to Yosemite in 1879 and lived there until he committed suicide in 1918. Most of his negatives were destroyed when his house burned in 1904.
