Rhodes & Whitney's Express offered banking and mail services in California, that operated from Sacramento to Marysville, Shasta, and Weaverville. . In 1855, Rhodes & Whitney Express was formed when Cornelius S.Whitney joined the business.,
John M. Rhodes, an early California pioneer, entered into the banking and express business, which eventually drew two of his brothers, James Mason Rhodes and George Washington Rhodes, as well as his uncle, Jesse Rhodes, to California. James or Uncle Jesse became the principals in the successive enterprises known as: Rhodes & Lusk's Express; Jas. M. Rhodes' Express / Rhodes & Co.'s Express; Rhodes & Whitney's Express; and finally (Jesse) Rhodes & Co. 's Express. In 1855, Rhodes & Whitney Express was formed when Whitney joined the business.
