Carte de visite, 2 3/8 x4. Actress Fanny Herring . Gurney & Son imprinted on front of mount along with backmark (partly obscured by surface damage).
Fanny Herring (1832–1906) was the daughter of popular performers; was born in London and came to America four years later. Herring maintained a lengthy career as one of the most popular actresses with New York's East Side audiences. In her younger days Fanny Herring was known for her striking beauty and she retained her youthfulness and energy so well that she played ingenues until almost the end of her career. After the popular success of Hazel Eyes, Herring played numerous feisty western women in short sketches sketches such as Cal the Cowboy,.Arizona Sue, and Wild Ned, all of which she wrote herself. In The Tigress of the West, in her play list from 1878 until 1887, Herring enacted a sympathetic native maiden. One of her particular specialties was taking on disguises or enacting more than one role, as she did in The Female Detective, in which she played six characters, and Little Buckshot; or, Brought to Light, in which she played Lillian Waters, Lillian Buckshot, and Little Buckshot. Little Buckshot, also known as The Boy Scout, was one of Fanny’s best known pieces, and she kept it in her repertory from April 1881 to Oct 1892. Critics praised Herring for her wide range of parts — ingenues, sou-brettes, leading ladies, and even some male roles.
This came from a period photograph album of theatrical personalities; unfortunately all had been mounted to a thicker substrate, and upon removal has scarred the backs to varied degrees. This cdv mount has not been compromised as to stability. The paper that was removed is primarily the surface layer, otherwise the cdv is in fine condition. cdv et 924 65.
