Illustrated envelope featuring William Jennings Bryan and George Washington , captioned “ A True Son of the Father of His Country”. On back is part of Cross of Gold speech along with other writings.
Bryan had travelled the country making speeches about the gold vs. silver coinage issue, and was asked to speak at 1896 Democratic National Convention. He gave the "Cross of Gold" speech, and that propelled him to be their choice to run against republican William McKinley.
